Bardsey Ladies mid 80s

Boston Spa Ladies 2007

HISTORY

We can trace our roots back to 1906 when a men’s Hockey Club was formed in Wetherby. The second world war brought men’s hockey to a halt although mixed hockey continued to be played and it wasn’t until 1958 when the men of Wetherby Mixed Hockey joined forces with the men of North Leeds Mixed to re-form Wetherby Men’s Hockey Club or to give it its full name, “ Wetherby and District Athletic Hockey Club.” Home match fees were 2 shillings (TEN PENCE) during season 60-61season. Up until 1974 all home games were played at Scaur Bank in Wetherby. WETHERBY HC 1906

In 1976 we were invited to join the newly formed Bardsey Sports Club and played our first season there in 76/77. We joined the Yorkshire Hockey League the following season. With the increasing requirement during the late 80s/early 90s for league hockey to be played on Astro pitches rather than grass meant that we had to play games at the likes of Fearnville in Leeds which weakened our ties to Bardsey.

In the mid 90’s due to our links to Boston Spa Academy which, with our involvement (through our late President John Mawson who designed the pitch) procured their own Astro, saw us play our home matches there and re-brand as Boston Spa Hockey Club for season 97/98.

Eventually (2001), having used the facilities at the “Barleycorn” and “Half Moon” pubs in Collingham we aligned with CALSA, initially on an associate basis but more recently as fully integrated members. It was a proud moment for the Hockey Section when our late Chair, Ken Peaker, was appointed President of CALSA.

Meanwhile the Ladies have a shorter history, starting life as Thorner in the swinging Sixties and playing initially at Soldiers Field in North Leeds. A number of mixed games were arranged with Bardsey (the tournaments at Peterborough are still talked about) and in 1977 the ladies became part of Bardsey Hockey Club changing their name in the process. With the opening of the Astro pitch at Boston Spa a further name change took place. The Ladies celebrated their 25th anniversary in 1996.

It would be fair to say the Ladies have won a bit more silverwear than the men,

just a few of their achievements:

2006/7 Yorkshire Premier League Champions AND Yorkshire Cup Winners

2009 Yorkshire Cup Winners

2012/13 Yorkshire Premier League Champions

2016/17 North Division 2SE Champions and North Challenger Tournament Winners

To-day we run two men’s teams and a ladies team and compete in the Yorkshire and North East leagues. Training is on a Wednesday evening at Boston Spa Academy and runs from September to March.

Summer hockey is available in the shape of men’s/ladies six a side leagues which run May/June.

We are always on the look out for new players.
